Can you tell us about your personal experience with mental health and what it means to you?
In hindsight, I can say I’ve always struggled with my emotions inwardly. It wasn’t until the conversation around mental health, especially with POC became more prominent, did I realize I wasn’t alone. I also realized and felt comfortable with the idea of not always feeling okay. In such a fast-paced career, maintaining a peaceful mind state is of the utmost importance to me.

How do you cope with mental health challenges / obstacles in your life?
I like to focus on what I feel may be the root of my mood change or mental state and see what I can change to make it better. And sometimes you can’t…but part of recovering is that acceptance and remembering nothing lasts forever. I say to myself all the time “the sun has to come, and then the moon, and then the sun again.” Essentially saying there is always a tomorrow.

What are some strategies or activities that have helped you maintain good mental health and well-being?
Music and existing outside are my go-to activities. I can exist within music in a way you can’t with other things. It doesn’t ask anything from you, and when you feel overwhelmed, the last thing you want is to be needed. I also make sure I spend an ample amount of time outside. I love just existing outside, sitting, walking, biking, etc. The feel of air against my skin, alongside an amazing playlist makes me happy.

How do you think we can create a more supportive environment for individuals to maintain mental health and well-being?
People need to remember that people are that…people. Compassion is key and you never know what people may be going through, or what they need. We all should slow down the best we can and try to see the world through other people’s lenses.

Can you share any stories or experiences that have inspired you or taught you something about mental health?
The pandemic was a weird time for us all. But with that time gave me time to think and access myself, my mental health and how I cope with it.
